Films that talk about libertinism (part 1)

Several films deal with libertinism by exploring the freedom of morals, sensuality, and the ethics of human relationships, while offering varied visions of this way of life. Today, we decided to present some of them to you, the next ones next week.


1. Dangerous Liaisons (1988)

This classic by Stephen Frears, based on the epistolary novel by Choderlos de Laclos, explores the amorous and libertine intrigues of the French aristocracy of the 18th century. The film stages the power games and seduction between two manipulative libertines, played by Glenn Close and John Malkovich.

2. Empire of the Senses (1976)

This Japanese film by Nagisa Oshima, based on a true story, tells the story of a passionate and destructive affair between two lovers in 1930s Japan. The film, known for its explicit eroticism, explores the limits of libertine passion and sexual freedom.

3. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Directed by Stanley Kubrick, this film explores the hidden fantasies and desires of a couple, played by Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Through secret parties and libertine circles, Eyes Wide Shut delves into the human psyche and questions fidelity, desire and the limits of libertinism.

4. The Belle Époque (2019)

Directed by Nicolas Bedos, this French film evokes the possibility of reliving moments of one's life in a staged setting. Although not purely focused on libertinism, it deals with the freedom of romantic choices and fantasies, offering an original perspective on escaping social conventions.

5. The Libertine (2000)

This French film by Gabriel Aghion, adapted from the play by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, is set in the 18th century and follows the misadventures of the libertine philosopher Denis Diderot (Vincent Pérez). The film, with a comic touch, explores the contradictions between sexual and moral freedom.
